The Problem with AI Line Art

I'm Jeffrey Tokarz — a charcoal artist specializing in impressionist realist portraits and landscapes. I draw inspiration from masters like Carl Bloch, Norman Rockwell, and John Singer Sargent. I've been taking commissions seriously since 2020, and I run JeffTokarzSTUDIO.com as my personal art brand.

I also serve as Executive Director and Gallery Operations Chair at Railroad Street Artworks, a cooperative art gallery in Fairport, NY. Working with dozens of artists daily has given me a deep understanding of what makes line work feel alive versus flat and algorithmic.

When I started experimenting with AI tools to convert photos into coloring pages — something my gallery visitors constantly asked about — I was frustrated. Every tool I tried produced the same generic, soulless output. Thin, uniform lines. No sense of hand or intention. The kind of result that screams "a computer made this."

As an artist, I know that great line art isn't about edge detection. It's about hierarchy — which lines are thick, which are thin, where the eye should travel. It's about knowing that a contour drawing feels completely different from a crosshatch illustration, and that a coloring page for a five-year-old needs fundamentally different line work than one for an adult.

LineForge exists because I couldn't find a tool that thought about line art the way an artist does. So I built one.

Artist Eye + AI Engine

LineForge isn't another generic AI filter. The AI models behind LineForge were trained on carefully curated examples of what good line art actually looks like — selected by an artist who understands composition, line weight hierarchy, and the difference between six distinct artistic traditions.

Every style engine (Contour, Crosshatch, Stipple, Woodcut, Manga, Minimal) was developed with specific artistic principles in mind. The detail slider isn't arbitrary — it maps to real-world complexity levels that make sense for different age groups and skill levels.

The result is line art that feels intentional. Art you'd actually want to color, frame, or compile into a book.

Part of the PrintsOnYourWall Family

LineForge is built by the same team behind PrintsOnYourWall.com — an AR art gallery platform that lets artists create augmented reality experiences so buyers can visualize artwork on their walls before purchasing.

Both platforms share the same mission: bring the tools of professional art into everyone's hands, with the quality and care that only comes from someone who actually makes art for a living.
